The Art of Retelling

A major focus in Reading this week was how to retell a story. Retelling is such an important skill that students need to master to show their understanding of what they have read. Students had several opportunities to retell some favorite stories. One way they retold a story was by writing it on sentence strips as a group. Another way was as I read a story aloud and they sketched pictures. After they went back and added the words to retell the story through pictures and words. Students also wrote a retelling. Their favorite way to retell the story was by acting it out. They worked in partners to create the setting on a paper bag and used Popsicle sticks and index cards to create the characters. Finally, they acted it out and retold the story for the class. Overall, they did a fantastic job!
